I Have A Problem With the Game: Ghost Squad For Wii

I just bought the game this afternoon. I started playing it a couple hours ago and wanted to add a second play, but it wouldnt let me. The booklet, which I've read about 15 times, says to press the + button on the respective controller. And I did that a million times. I am getting a gigantic headache from trying to figure this out. I've been at it for about 2-3 hours trying to figure out howt to get it to work. So, if you can please tell me how to add a second player.

Did you press the buttons on the second wii remote, not the first?

Click the home button (the one with the house on it) then at the bottom are the controller things, cflick on that, and then it should bring up something to do with syncing remotes? you press 1+2 at the same time on the first remote, then repeat with the other remote, and that should work.
