| relize it or not fire explorers do some work. in the past ten years 2 fire explorers died firefighting a fire. no they dont do as much as firefighters but they do save lives. like when a paramedic needs help doing cpr the explorer helps when they need a pair of hands to do rehab the explorer is there. fire explorer chris kangas died responding to a call he was denied state funding for his funeral. why cause he was not a certifed firefighter but in a diffent state fire explorer Alethea Faye Nixon was given a full funeral mostly paid by the fire dept. my point is they did this to help people they risk there lives just like firefighters |

No, he was denied federal benefits. The state did recognize him as a fire fighter, it's the federal government that did not.
News Article
| Quote: | The state never questioned Kangas’ status when it paid a mid-$90,000 benefit. Neither did the borough, when it paid the fire company benefit of $175,000, he said.
"By the state paying benefits, they are telling you right there they recognized him as a firefighter," Montella said. |

| I dont think they should. If they want benefits like a firefighter, they should become a firefighter. |

| At the moment, they are too young to be fire fighters and they have limited duties in the sense of they can't go into the house. |

| I really don't think they should get the same benefits/honors as a firefighter, though. If you do that, then you are going to get a ripple effect going, with more and more people wanting things. Should I get rewarded because I gave a guy the heimlech? Whether or not my life was in safety, I did help. |

Reading the article helps. Fire explorers are recognized by the fire department and serves to start training people who would like to become volunteers at a younger age like 18 before they're eighteen. They get their own equipment, including a beeper so they know when a fire alarm is sent out. That article or a different one mentioned that the fire explorers are more like junior volunteers, but some junior volunteers are more experienced and better than the senior volunteers who are the regular volunteer fire department.
I think fire explorers is sort of a regional thing because I don't believe we have anything of that sort in Ohio. |
