I swear more and more schools aren't offering sex education or teaching abstinence-only. While abstinence can be fine, I believe that by not informing the students or focusing only on the negatives of other birth control, it seems like the adults are ignoring hundreds of kids who are going to be sexually active.
My state teaches abstinence-only so many of the schools don't teach any sex ed at all to avoid the issue. We've had at least four if not five teenagers pregnant since I started junior high (7th grade, average age is 12).
Actually, I suppose they do teach sex education at my school, only I never received it. I remember those platic card things saying 'I'm saving myself for marriage' floating around the schools in junior high. Maybe those girls wouldn't have gotten pregnant and the few who did have abortions wouldn't have needed them if they had known ways of not getting pregnant. |

| I was talking to a couple of middle school girls, and my youth pastor, we were on our way home from something. and we got on this topic. The girls said they only had the video in 4th grade (which was made in like the 50's), thats all I had to. They said that their high school (they live ina different district than me) doesn't offer sex ed. My youth pastor said it's ashame b/c kids aren't learning the proper use of a condom, or what you can get from sex, other than HIV and stuff. I totally agree to. it's no wonder girls are pregnant. I mean in our society both parents work, so kids don't really get "the talk." some parents even say, just be safe. I mean come on, what is that teaching a kid? |

It's like they were only set on one thing: scaring us out of having sex. I remember disgusting images projected of STDs. They put so much negative on it that it was hard to remember the positive. We did have one really good guest speaker who told us about options we have and the fact that sex isn't BAD. And what about when we are adults, perhaps married? Shouldn't they focus on that too so we don't grow up with a distorted perspective and can fully appreciate sex when we do have it? Fear mongering only does so much, but we've got less problems than some schools with students being pregnant because the guest speakers usually help with the distribution of condoms and helpful information we may not already have had shouted at us a thousand times, like where to find the emergency case only morning after pill. Without them it'd be hopeless, and I can't get it out of my head how our actual teacher seemed to be saying: don't do it cause you're kids and you shouldn't and you'll get pregnant or die of HIV. Ok, so we know about the diseases. There are other aspects to sex too. We do -thanks to our annual speaker- have a bunch of well informed sluts, but I suppose that is better than a bunch of pregnant sluts isn't it? they still have opportunities ahead and haven't had risky surgeries. And I'm not saying sexually active people are slutty, that would be daft. I'm just thinking of some people I know in school. |
