I read this article 4 one of my classes where this lady wrote in to her representative about shows on tv that she finds disturbing for herself as well as her family. Basically what she's saying is that even the regular channels like Fox, NBC, etc. show explicit programming that's inappropriate like nudity and drugs but her main focus was the sex/nudity. She wants the gov't to step in and "comply with the standards of decency that the majority of the American public wants enforced." she wants them to basically just ban the programs all together.
she talks about different shows from music videos on MTV to Family Guy on Fox. she said that she wouldn't want any ppl coming in her house and stripping so why would she want them to do so via her tv in front of her kids.
she makes very valid points, and raises the question: "When does tv go too far?" she claims that she's tried the parental blocking and it doesn't work so the only option she sees is for the gov't to take control of the situation.
When do you guys think tv goes too far with their programs? (excluding HBO and other subscriber channels) Should the gov't step in and regulate these programs or is she just an over-dramatic mom who can't control her kids? If she is then what should she do to control them?
Personally, Family Guy and South Park are like some of my favorite cartoons in the world. but is she right? are these programs too inappropriate for kids to view? are they forcing sexuality on kids? everybody knows that these shows do show some explicit scenes, but is it that serious where the gov't needs to limit the Entertainment Industry b/c after all, its just entertainment...right?
if u wanna know my opinion, i think she should just change the channel. simple solution! if u don't like it, don't watch it. b/c i watch shows like South Park everyday, and i dont want the gov't to change them around-they wont be any good to watch anymore. my brother and his wife have 4 kids who all have tv's in their rooms, and in order to insure that they dont watch these types of shows they just have the cable company block all channels that they feel are inappropriate, and it works just fine for them so why can't she do the same? i dont see them writing letters to their reps.
if u wanna read the actual article she wrote i attached it.

| right, i mean, if ppl are stupid enough to do somthing they see on south park at home and hurt themselves or someone else, guess what, its there fault, and if they are too young to know any better, guess what else, its their parents fault for letting them watch it, all the tv is supposed to do is entertain and inform, which it does a decent job of, aside from mtv, that shit can be banned, send it to iraq, make them as ignorant and stereotypical as we are...

| all mtv plays now are dating shows, fake "reality" shows, and trl only plays like seconds of music videos, the dating shows are boring and stereoypical, the white guy is horny and emotionless, the white girl is slutty and dingy, the black guy talks overly ebonic, and the black girl is loud and outspoken. i dont see how anyone can find this entertaining. and then to sit there and watch some ramdom spoiled, bitchy rich chick throw her own sweet 16 party, and there is always drama and someone always gets thrown out or somthing goes wrong and girls cry, and that fake laguna beach shit which makes it seem like everyone there is beautiful, ppl are not like that, they act different on camera. i remember a day that mtv acually had somthing to do with music... and celebrity deathmatch, cartoon sushi, and beavis and butthead.

mtv's not that bad...sometimes
but tv has gotton more and more sexual
like they know that cartoons appeal to kids and whatnot but on Family Guy and South Park they show them having sex, cursing, and everything else under the sun.
maybe the reason why the lady is trippin is because how much of an influence the media has on everyone; not even just kids. look at how many ppl started smoking when they started the cigarette commercials, and now they've banned them. but u know what? they're a day late and a dollar short, and maybe she just doesn't want them to be late with this one.
to be honest, who knows what's next? Disney might be showing porno flix in the near future. (and i just bet some of you are counting down)

| Okay, but you know what. The kids that we want to prevent seeing shows like south park and family guy, well its their parents' resposibility to keep their kids from watching those shows. Family guy and south park are actually pretty funny. I mean, they only play those shows later at night and they play them on things like adult swim. My parents didn't want me to watch south park when I was little, and I didn't she even one episode until I was like 14, so I think its the parents responsibility to control what their kids watch.

the media does have a major influence on our lifestyles w/o a doubt but i still would never wanna see an edited version or "parental" version of South Park
honestly i'd probably protest or something...hell i'd even write congress a new legislation for it...
yes, i take it that seriously
but anyway, the mom has a point, no doubt
the parental code things dont always work u know. she cant block every freakin channel she deems inappropriate. how many channels r on cabel/satellite nowadays? like a thousand right? i doubt anybody's mom would wanna flip through a thousand channels to c if all the programming is appropriate. then she's not only talking about the shows, but she's also talking about the commercials too. u know late at night how those "family" channels turn erotic. they show the girls gone wild, the dating services, party lines, etc. they advertise porn in the middle of your show.
she's not only talking about her kids viewing this stuff, she's sayin she dont want her or her husband to be seeing those chicks flashing their boobs for the girls gone wild videos either.
so to what extent are viewers responsible for the media that they are exposed to, and to what extent is it the gov't's responsibility???
